H G is from a farming family in the Western Ghats of Karnataka. He studied in Baroda, India, and taught in Delhi. He worked in the toy industry for a while, which made him realize the ecological impacts of industrialization plaguing his hometown and the world. He founded the social organization Sustainable Alternatives for Rural Accord (SARA).
